“Biometrics has been part of the federal identity arena for about 20 years now. The Federal Civilian Government's PIV Card and the Department of Defense's Common Access Card both contain facial image biometrics, fingerprint biometrics, and they have for over 20 years,” said Electrosoft CEO, Dr. Sarbari Gupta in a recent Cybersecurity TV interview. “But lately, the standards have changed so that a person can actually authenticate electronically using their facial image, meaning it's a one-on-one match with what's on the card.”
Biometrics is just one of several technological advancements embraced by government to protect their people, systems, and data.
“Another exciting trend in the identity space has been the development of what's called passkeys…. That’s a strong cryptographic authenticator that is enabled when you use your biometrics, such as a facial image or your fingerprint, and then that cryptographic key can be used to authenticate the person to a remote website or a system,” added Dr. Gupta.
